Plug-In (a game)

Plug-in is a 2D puzzle platformer where the player has to drag a power cable across a gigantic computer, while keeping it safe. The player connects the cable to different power terminals which grant different properties to the cable.  through out the making of the level design, I had to be aware of the many constraint that come with carrying a cable. designing the puzzles was hard, but I think I managed to make a good job seeing to the fact that NewGrounds front-paged our game and it then got a lot of traction.

Challenges of designing the puzzles

There were 2 main challenges while designing the levels. They were all unique to their own constraints.

  • Teaching the players as they go

  • Respecting the technical constraint of the cables

I will explain the 2 of them in more detail below.

Having only one programmer and doing something that had no precedent in unity, made it so the cables sometimes acted in unpredictable ways. There were a lot of different puzzles that I had to adjust in order to bypass certain circumstance where these funky interaction arose, or simply switch for a whole different puzzle. So I had to adapt at every step in order to help the cable feel as good as possible.

On a last note, I would really recommend playing the game to get a better feel of what I wanna demonstrate. You can play online or download it.

Teaching the players as they go

The reason this was a one of the challenge is because of how short the game is. The game is still 30-40 minutes on a first discovery, but with having to teach the player about 4 different abilities and to teach them the physics of the cable, it took a bit of work. All that said, with careful planning and making sure that each of the puzzles taught something to the player the game manages to guide the player into finding the proper solution
